Axon has been working to develop a clear path for customers; we have moved from AVB, via ST2022 to TR03 (and TR04). This shift in focus in itself is not a big deal – our development team has always been well placed to react to the market - but these technologies are as equal as they are different and all are very complex. It is clear that ST2022 is here to stay in some applications. Whether TR03 will be embraced completely by our industry still needs to be seen. The signs are all there. When that happens, we will have to deal with both 2022 and TR03 for many years to come.

Video/audio over Ethernet

Axon has been working to develop a clear path for customers; we have moved from AVB, via ST2022 to TR03 (and TR04). This shift in focus in itself is not a big deal – our development team has always been well placed to react to the market - but these technologies are as equal as they are different and all are very complex. It is clear that ST2022 is here to stay in some applications. Whether TR03 will be embraced completely by our industry still needs to be seen. The signs are all there. When that happens, we will have to deal with both 2022 and TR03 for many years to come.

Axon’s strategy remains both customer-focused and pragmatic. We are committed to delivering products and hybrid solutions that the industry needs as it moves from SDI to IP, providing control for these products with our latest NMOS-ready Cerebrum software platform.  In addition, Axon remains agnostic, working on the next generation of products where Ethernet is the default interface and SDI is finally put to rest with the respect it deserves.

Highlights of the Neuron Core:

 •       Protocol standard agnostic powered by “Protocol (engine) Configurator

•       Low maintenance

•       Easy customization

•       Adaptive behaviour standards that can be distinguished from each other

•       Only packetizer with “Traffic shaper” (important for active bursty picture protocols like TR-03)

Core modules that are common to all standards remain as they are. If in future standards untouched cores need to be modified they will be placed under control of the protocol (engine) configurator. This level of modularization provides a fantastic flexibility while the complexity remains within limits. The individual cores are still extremely complex entities but the way they are programmed allows for isolated testing and maintenance

Another example of practical re-use is the priority based traffic shaper that was developed (and is mandated) for AVB. The module allows for a bursty signal to be spread over time in the IP domain. As video (and audio in lesser degree) is synchronous and most sources (cameras) will be locked to the same reference the burst character of for instance TR03 (with no data during blanking) will cause errors if you make your bandwidth calculations wrong. In 50Hz a 3Gb/s SDI 1080p signal contains 1 Gb/s of blanking. Quite a waste of bandwidth in ST2022. But to benefit from the lower payload data rate of TR03 with mainly active picture being transported you need to spread the synchronous signals over time. That is exactly what a traffic shaper does.

We also developed a special de-packetizer version of the Neuron Core for use in MultiView applications. This core is smaller and uses a simplified timing engine as the data is scaled directly when it leaves the de-packetization before moving into the buffer. This helps reducing the memory bandwidth needed for this task. (we are always running out of memory bandwidth).

The NIO440 bridge/node

When we developed the NIO440 Ethernet bridge/node we were still focused on AVB/TSN and our goal was to make a flexible future proof platform. With 8 bi-directional 3Gb/s SDI connections, 2 10GbEthernet ports, a GigE port and very important a reference output that can be locked to PTP (2059) we had the physical requirements for a future proof product. Today next to AVB it also does ST2022-6 and TR03 will follow very soon.
